Over the holidays, I didn't really do all that much. As soon as we got out of school for
break, my family packed up all of our bags and set off on a four hour trek to my grandparents house. I mean, four hours isn't that long, especially when you have an amazing book such as The Fault In Our Stars by John Green to keep you occupied. Although, I wish I wouldn't have been in the car while finishing the book because I ended up bawling for the last 50 or so pages. If you've read the book, you understand why.
After arriving at my grandparents, we unloaded the car and settled into the rooms, one
room decorated for the grand boys and the other for me, the only grand daughter. I sort of get a special treatment for being the only girl along with four loud, hyperactive boys. One plus side is that I got to paint and decorate my room however I wanted, which id pretty cool. My grandmother is the only person who would let me dip my hand in paint and make handprints on the wall, so I feel pretty special.
One of the many things we did after arriving is handing out presents to the Angel Tree
children. All the grandkids and my Nanny and Papa hopped in the car and had the gifts in our laps ready to deliver. It was really a cool experience to give out gifts to people that don't get them. It made me realize how lucky i am to get the presents I get. I felt bad for the people who can't buy their children gifts, and it made me want to give more. I decided that next Christmas I will try even harder to give as many as those kids a great Christmas because they deserve it more than I do.
Giving gifts to people is actually more fun than actually receiving the gifts. Seeing kids
and even the parents faces light up with joy and thankfulness is truly inspiring. Along with that, my cousins were just as fun. We made jokes in the car and just laughed the whole time. My cousin, Sam, who is five, definitely kept us entertained. He kept saying that my grandparents were Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus and that we were their little elves. At one point he leaned over to me and whispered, "Can you believe we are pulling this off?! People think we are Santa Claus and his elves! We must be really good actors!" That made me laugh extremely hard. My cousins are the cutest kids, especially all the things they say. We joked and laughed and were just having a ton of fun the entire day. I was glad to be able to spend a little quality time with my family, especially while doing the things we were doing. It was also a good lesson for all of us grandkids that even if we don’t get all the things we want for Christmas, we should still feel blessed with what we have. A lot of the children our age don’t get presents. It broke my heart to see the children so exstatic over the simple little things, and it made me want to live my life the way they did, always being greatful for the little things and moments I get with my family.
Over Christmas, I definitely learned that its not just about getting a bunch of presents.
It is good to give as well. The Angel Tree children made me realize this with their greatfulness of getting one or two gifts whereas they usually wouldn't give any. It definitely inspired me to be a better person and to just be thankguk for what I have, because there is a lot of children in the world who are lucky to get a simple gift. I realized just how blessed I am, and that is the greatest gift I got this Christmas. Next year, I hope to give to more Angel Tree children gifts and maybe inspire them as they have done to me. I was so thankful to be able to give and be part of delivering the gifts this year, and it is definitely something I would love to do again next year. All around, I had a wonderful Christmas break, and I can’t wait to see what next year has in store.
