Max led me through a hallway, travelling further from my room. It’s strange how something that seems so safe can also be the thing that leads to your demise. Max sure as heck better be telling the truth this time and not place me directly in the hands of the murderous lunatics wanting to kill me off.
Bare feet pounding lightly against the linoleum floors, we sprinted through the twists and turns that I couldn’t have memorized to save my life. The halls were almost an eerily quiet, no sound but our heavy breathing echoing off the white walls. My gut told me something was wrong as soon as I began to hear the yelling.
“WHERE IS SHE? IT SHOULDN’T BE THAT HARD TO LOOK AFTER A SLEEPING TEENAGER.THIS IS ON YOUR HEAD, WINSTEN.”
I turned to Max, seeing if he had heard. My eyes met his as I whispered, “Are you a supernatural, yes or no?” His eyes shone as he nodded his head. This was the first good thing to happen all day. I yanked on his arm. “Let’s race, hot shot,” I whisper-shouted, taking off at my faster-than-the-average-human speed.
“You’ll have to do much better than that, princess. Are you even trying,” he mocked laughingly. His smile took the rough edges of his face away and replaced them with extremely handsome features. I stared as long as I could, trying not to get noticed to no avail.
“You’re definitely not going to beat me if you keep staring and drooling. I know I’m amazingly charming and drop dead gorgeous, but we are kind of running for our lives here. I promise I’ll let you take a picture later,” he said playfully. I snapped back to reality, feeling heat rush to my cheeks. How could running from my own certain death be this much fun?
Max began to slow down as he breathed out, “I think we are far enough ahead to walk a little ways.” I slowed my pace, and was pleasantly surprised to find his hand in mine. “This way,” he mumbled, opening a door to yet another hallway.
“Okay, seriously, how big is this place? This is the seventh hallway you’ve taken me down. Are you sure you know the way,” i questioned jokingly.
“Two hallways left, scout’s honor,” he said, raising his hand.
“God, you’re such a dork,” I replied, giggling.
“Oh my dear, you have to admit, I’m the cutest dork you’ve ever seen.” He spoke so confidently.
“That’s definitely debatable, sweetie,” i joked back, heart pumping. Am I seriously flirting at a time like this? I began to get nervous. Why would I choose now of all times to become interested in a boy?
Max put his hand on his chest, fake shock lighting his face. “You’re telling me there is someone more handsome than I? Show me this man, I must see.” Laughter overtook my body. He laughed along with me for a while.
“You know, I’ve never been all that into girls, Alex. But something about you is different. God, you’re gorgeous, and not to mention insane. I like it,” he mumbled as I sat there speechless. “Wow, I need to punch a wall to feel more manly. I’m sorry I shouldn’t have said that,” he continued, pain clearly displayed on his face.
“Wait, no! You’re fine! I feel the same for you. I just didn’t expect you to feel that way about me. I’ve never been in that situation, and I wasn’t expecting that. You don’t seem like one to declare your love for someone,” I replied laughing.
“It’s because I’m not, so feel lucky, princess,” he answered, winking. His face began to get closer to mine until we were inches apart. My heart began to race faster than it had the whole time I was here. Our faces inched even closer together, and anticipation filled my body.
Suddenly, alarms pierced the hallways. We jumped apart, running as fast as we could to get to the exit. That’s when everything turned bad.
